In my modest opinion, the only difference going to be the age, where the older ones had already mature, stronger muscles and moulting which translate in better feathers. The good gens, homing instinct, good health and motivation can be in any batch, that's what really make the difference between the bad, good and excelent racing pigeons.

All have the same chances, because the genes are shared in a perfectly random process. However, the 3rd or 4th series of the year might need more patience from you, you know latebreds are always fussy - but not because of their genes, but because of the weather, diseases striking more in autumn, parents being tired and so on. Also they don't race so good next year because of the incomplete moulting. At least that's what most fanciers say. I had such a latebred that came one hour before my other 40 pigeons I sent to a long distance race. It was also raining and there was a race over the mountains. Hard to forget...

conditioning the birds is very important, but there's a lot of different system that fanciers follow.
but the most important is make sure that the birds are healthy when you send them to race, well motivated to come home, full and bouyant
